Motorola recently introduced the Minitor IV, designed to deliver improved functionality and greater dependability. Both are critical in a product used to dispatch fire and safety personnel. Just ask George Spencer, Fire Chief of Addison Township in Michigan.

Chief Spencer's personnel all use the Minitor III pager for dispatch communications. During a recent, intense fire at the residence of the township's Assistant Fire Chief, firefighters encountered strong radio feedback as they called to report that the fire was under control. They quickly discovered the reason: the smoldering but functioning melted remains of a Minitor III pager. A red light signaled that the pager had a stored voice message. "We were really amazed," remarked Chief Spencer. "It was incredible that it (Minitor) still worked." Not so amazing, when you consider the extensive field-condition testing all Motorola Minitors undergo. This includes being subjected to temperatures ranging from -40 to over 185 degrees Fahrenheit.

Minitor IV's better design includes a stronger, more durable housing that helps prevent separation when dropped, and a battery door with improved integrity. Chief Spencer was particularly impressed with the larger, more tapered knobs and the redesigned function switch on the Minitor IV. "The big knobs are easy to use and turn," the noticed, "and it's very distinctive on the selection switch so there's no doubt where you're at, and it is not going to get turned unless you turn it by hand."
